Gakenke Washing Station — Kayanza, Burundi

Located in Burundi’s Kayanza province, Gakenke Washing Station has been a cornerstone of the region’s coffee community since its establishment in 1991. The station serves 2,667 smallholder farmers, each cultivating an average of just 250 trees on parcels as small as one-tenth of a hectare. Alongside coffee, these farmers grow subsistence and market crops such as bananas, beans, yams, taro, and cassava — all vital to their livelihood.

Because of the limited size and yield of individual farms, washing stations like Gakenke are the heart of coffee production in Burundi. Unlike in Central and South America, where producers may have their own processing facilities, most Burundian farmers rely on centralized stations for cherry collection, sorting, blending, and post-harvest processing. These stations play a critical role in transforming day lots into structured, export-ready coffees.

The Animal

With its bold red cap, black-and-white checkered wings, and rhythmic drumming echoing through the forest, the Norwegian woodpecker—more formally the Great Spotted Woodpecker—is one of Norway’s most charismatic birds. Found year-round in woodlands across the country, it’s a master carpenter of the natural world, chiseling out nests in birch and pine with a beak built like a jackhammer.

But there's more to this forest drummer than meets the eye. These clever birds stash food in bark crevices for winter and can stick out their long, barbed tongue nearly as far as their entire beak to grab hidden insects. Known for their persistence and unmistakable tree-tapping rhythms, they’ve long been seen as messengers of resilience in Nordic folklore—small birds with big presence.
